Alex Higgin-Houser (he/him) is a dramatist and educator. Recently: Haymarket (mus: David Kornfeld) won Chicago's Joseph Jefferson Award for Best New Musical, and was selected for the inaugural 2024 Drama Camp residency. Discovery (mus: Dan Gibson), written in consultation with NASA astronauts, was thrice selected for the Catwalk Art Residency, and is being developed by Drama Club Productions. Shadow on the Wall (mus: Zonia Tsang), a shadow-puppet opera, had its digital premier with American Opera Project. Adventurers (mus: Lucy O’Brien), where dice rolls determine the musical’s plot, was workshopped at Whitman College. As Artistic Director of Underscore Theatre, Alex developed new musicals in Chicago from 2011-18, while co-producing the Chicago Musical Theatre Fest. With an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from NYU Tisch, Alex has taught at New Studio on Broadway, Elon, UChicago, Whitman, and Oberlin College.
