Julia Barry

Julia Barry is a composer and designer living in Brooklyn, NY. She found her love of piano and singing at an early age, and began to compose and record albums as a teen. She focused on music, writing, and media studies at Sarah Lawrence College, and went on to get her Masters in Interactive media at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Active in the NY arts scene, Barry composes songs and scores for the stage and film/TV, and performs with groups from rock bands to classical choirs. She enjoys participating in programs like the New Dramatists Composer-Librettist Studio and Art-a-Hack, which emphasize community and creative vibrance. She has been accepted to artist residencies across the country including Chalk Hill, Brush Creek, and VCCA, and has collaborated with groups like the New York City Master Chorale, Nebular Blue, KC VITAs, and the Exit Project. Barry is especially interested in collaborative work and the social impact of the arts. She uses her art to raise funds for nonprofits, organize community-building projects, and support the work of other artists, caretakers, and progressives with content and digital services. Her collaborative performance series, "Habitat: Home," received grants from the NY Women Composers Foundation, Puffin West Foundation, The Pollination Project, and the Brooklyn Arts Council, while her latest EP, Just the Dear Ones, supports Music and Memory, a foundation that fights dementia with music. She is currently a composer and bookwriter in the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Advanced Songwriting and Librettist Workshops, where she is working on an interactive musical about the power of choosing to care in an apathetic world. She also runs a sustainable business, UpRoot Design Studio, to help everyday people go green with joy. Her recent "Love is Our Greatest Power" collection supports VEAP, a food pantry delivering to those in need in Minneapolis.
